"Doraemon" is the Japanese title of the series, which literally means "future explorer". The Japanese character for future is 未来 (miira) and explorer is 冒険家 (boukyakuji). 丸 (maru) means circle and 提督 (tai-sui) means admiral or Admiral. Therefore, this title literally means "Admiral Future Explorer". "Doraemon"s original name was "Future Boy Conan". However, it was changed as it has been found that there was already a series called "Future Boy Conan". Thus, the name was changed to "Doraemon". Thus, there is no connection between the English and Japanese names. The series premiered in Japan on 4th September 1979 and ended on 20th March 2005 on Nippon Television with 1,787 episodes being aired.
